Prof. Shekhar Chaudhuri is a B.Tech (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur and a Fellow (Ph.D) of IIM Ahmedabad with specialization in Business Policy. He was a faculty member at IIM Ahmedabad in the Business Policy Area from 1981 till 2002. In November 2002 he was appointed as the Director of IIM Calcutta where he served in that capacity for two consecutive terms of 5 years till April 2013. Prior to that he had been a Visiting Professor in the Department of Management, College of Business and Administration at the Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Illinois, USA for two years from August 1989 till August 1991, while on long leave from IIMA.
He was a Senior Fulbright Fellow at the University of California at Berkeley in 1988 and also a Visiting Scholar at the Twente University of Technology at Enschede, The Netherlands in the Technology and Development Group during December 1983 to February 1984 and a Visiting Professor of Strategic Management and International Management at ESCP, Paris ( Paris School of Management ) during 1996. During May 2000 to December 2001 he was invited by his alma mater, IIT Kharagpur to head the Vinod Gupta School of Management in the capacity of Dean. On completion of his tenure as Director IIM Calcutta he was invited by the Shiv Nadar University, Greater Noida, as the Founding Director of the School of Management and Entrepreneurship where he worked from May 2013 to May 2015.
During his long academic career Prof. Chaudhuri taught several courses to MBA and Ph.D students in the areas of Business Policy, Strategic Management, Management of Technology and Innovation, International Management, Japanese Management, Management in Asian Countries, and Leadership. He has also been an accomplished trainer and has taught in middle, senior and top level management development programmes and has published a large number of research papers in reputed national and international journals. In the mid 1990s he led the India part of an international 8 country research project titled Institutional and Policy Priorities for Industrial Technology Development sponsored by The World Bank.
Prof Chaudhuri has been a member of the Board of Directors of several companies including GVFL, Ahmedabad; GIPCL, Vadodara; Tata-Ryerson Ltd.( now Tata Steel Processing and Distribution Company ); OIL India; and Garden Reach Shipbuilders, etc. He has also been a member of the Board of Governors of several educational organizations including IIM Calcutta, XIM, Bhubaneswar and a Visitor to Vishwa Bharati University, IIT Kanpur, Manipur University, Tezpur University, and Aligarh Muslim University, etc. He currently sits on the Board of Governors of Development Management Institute, Patna and is a member of the Academic Council of Flame University, Pune and is associated with IIHMR University, Jaipur (Indian Institute of Health Management Research University) in an advisory capacity. He currently sits on the Board of Directors of WBEIDC (West Bengal Electronics Industry Corporation). In the past he has been a member of several committees set up by the Government of India and the Government of West Bengal.
Prof. Chaudhuri was elected as the President of the Association of Indian Management Schools during 2006-07 and has been a recipient of several awards in recognition of his professional work, Senior Fulbright Fellowship at U C Berkeley in 1988, MIT Pune's Bharat Asmita Acharya Shreshtha Award (2009) given by the then Vice-President of India, Mr. Hamid Ansari; the Ravi Mathai National Fellowship Award given by the Association Indian Management Schools in 2012; and the Distinguished Alumnus Award given by IIT Kharagpur in 2020".
